Paths to Impressionism: French and American Landscape Painting

This exhibition of nineteenth-century French and American landscapes includes major works by Claude Monet, George Inness and Childe Hassam. Poetic views, mysterious forest interiors and brilliantly colored investigations of light and color indicate the diverse subject matter and varied interpretations of nature represented. The complex and changing relationship of man and the natural environment is a significant theme of these paintings, frequently explored through the artist's personal reaction to his environment. At a time of increasing urbanization and industrialization, beautifully painted landscapes were a source of pleasure and escape for both artists and their patrons, indicating a desire to find comfort and solace in the power of nature transformed by art. The forty-two works displayed are from the extensive holdings of the Worcester Art Museum. [ more information ]
